For a local home-service company, the competition online does not stop at having a good-looking website. Search engines also encounter a web of outside references to each business, including links from other websites. One way to examine that part of a company’s digital footprint is to count the number of unique websites, or referring domains, that link to its domain.

SC Marketing & AI analyzed a 100-business sample of South Carolina home-service companies spanning multiple regions of the state. The goal was simple: establish a practical benchmark for how widely backlink profiles vary among real businesses competing in South Carolina markets.

The analysis found a meaningful divide. A measurable backlink profile was returned for 60 of the 100 domains in the sample. Among those 60 domains, the median was 74 referring domains.

For the remaining 40 domains, the backlink data source returned no measurable profile. That does not necessarily mean those businesses had zero links, so they are not treated as zero in the median calculations below.
